PETALING JAYA: Hospital Jempol has conducted its first cornea tissue donation procedure, says Health director-general Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan (pic).
In a statement Monday (July 31), Dr Muhammad Radzi said the corneal recovery procedure was conducted on the late Mathialagan Nadarajan, 61, on July 17.
“Although still mourning the demise of a family member, his next of kin had agreed to donate the corneas of the deceased," he said.
The donated corneas were sent to the tissue bank at Hospital Sungai Buloh where a transplant will be conducted.
"The Health Ministry expresses its condolences and appreciation to the donor’s family on their readiness to allow the tissue donation, which will give the recipient hope,” he said.
According to ministry records, this is the first tissue donation procedure conducted at Hospital Jempol and the fifth for a hospital under the Tuanku Ampuan Najihah Kuala Pilah hospitals cluster since 2008.
There are three hospitals under the cluster, namely Hospital Jempol, Hospital Tampin, and Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Najihah in Kuala Pilah.
Dr Muhammad Radzi hoped this would set an example for more people to follow suit ahd pledge their organs for donation.
