Motorist killed, passengers hurt after car hits parked lorry in Keningau

KOTA KINABALU: A man was killed while his two passengers were hurt when their car rammed into the back of a parked lorry in Sabah’s interior Keningau district early Monday (July 31).

Gerit Polong, 35, who was driving, died on the scene while his companions aged 19 and 25 were rushed to hospital following the 1am incident at Jalan Kampung Bakiau.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said they were alerted to the accident at 1.02am.

Firemen who arrived at the scene shortly afterward found all three trapped in their car.

"Our men freed the victims and the injured were given initial treatment by the Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit.

"A team from the Health Ministry confirmed the driver had died on the scene," he said.

The injured victims were then sent to the district hospital in an ambulance, he added.

The spokesman said the body of the deceased was handed over to the police for the next course of action, and the operation ended at 1.40am.
