My focus is on work, not on my Umno membership, says Shahelmey

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Shahelmey Yahya (pic) will stay focussed on his work as Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III and state Works Minister for now rather than worry about his political future.

He said he preferred to keep issues like his Umno membership status aside at the moment, and would think about the way forward for himself only towards the end of the state government's term in 2025.

With regard to state matters, he said the coming legislative assembly meeting is expected to focus more on supplementary budgets apart from the tabling of some new Bills.

These Bills would be from other ministries and not his, he told reporters at the Warriors' Day celebration here on Monday (July 31).

The assembly is scheduled to be in session from Aug 7 to 10.

On Sunday (July 30), Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said a suspension letter from Umno to Shahelmey was not necessary as the matter had been dealt with internally.

“I accept this with an open heart. I will just keep working,” said Shahelmey.

The Putatan MP was among several Sabah Barisan Nasional and Umno members who were suspended from the party after they did not support the attempt with Parti Warisan to topple the state government in January.

Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin subsequently announced that Shahelmey’s membership had been suspended for six years.
