Penang polls: Our supporters will vote for each other’s candidates, say Umno, DAP leaders

BUTTERWORTH: Umno and DAP supporters will vote for each other’s candidates in the Penang state election, say party leaders.

"Our voters will vote for DAP candidates as requested by Lim (Guan Eng), its an assurance that I give here today," said state Barisan Nasional and Umno chairman Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir during his speech at the Pakatan Harapan/Barisan manifesto launch and introduction of candidates here on Tuesday (Aug 1).

Lim, in his speech, also assured that DAP voters will vote for Umno candidates.

He also urged the state government to declare a public holiday on election day on Aug 12 for a higher voter turnout.

In a night of fiery speeches and loud applause, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said it was time to put a stop to Perikatan Nasional’s slander.

"Elections are about charting a future for the people, but the Opposition has made it about spreading lies and half-truths to win votes.”

State PKR vice-chairman Goh Choon Aik, in his speech, claimed Pakatan and Barisan have “secured” 26 seats in Penang and set to retain the state for a fourth term.

However Amanah vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa warned the coalition of being over confident, saying there were still doubts over the “grey areas” where a no-clear win could be seen.

"Let's be circumspect in our assessment as we do not want to be caught by surprise as what happened in Malay-majority constituencies during the 15th General Election.”

State DAP vice-chairman Zairil Khir Johari unveiled the manifesto.

Caretaker Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who is state Pakatan chairman, introduced the election candidates after his speech.
