Penang reports political vandalism

GEORGE TOWN: Penang police have received three reports of vandalism of party flags since the campaigning period for the state election began on Saturday.

Police spokesman Senior Asst Comm W. Pusphanathan said the reports were lodged in Central Seberang Prai, North Seberang Prai, and the island’s Southwest District.

SAC Pusphanathan, who is Penang’s Crime Prevention and Community Security Department chief, said all cases were being investigated for vandalism of flags of competing political parties, but no arrests have been made so far.

He also said the police had approved 79 permits to hold talks by political parties.

“We advise political parties to apply for a ceramah permit early to ease the process of approval,” he told reporters here yesterday.

In KUALA TERENGGANU, Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman claimed to have seen a message over WhatsApp purportedly intended for PAS supporters while candidates were filing their papers during nomination day.

He could not ascertain whether it came from the Islamist party.

“The message urged PAS supporters to pray that their political opponents be struck by blindness,” he said. “Campaign respectfully,” advised the former Terengganu mentri besar from 2013 to 2018.
