Senior citizen killed in early morning road crash in Johor


KOTA TINGGI: A 90-year-old woman died in a road accident after a pick-up truck driven by her grandson hit a traffic light and a road sign at KM36.5 of Jalan Johor Baru-Mersing here.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Hussin Zamora said police received information about a fatal accident at around 12.10am on Tuesday (August 1) morning.

“In this incident, the 4WD vehicle, driven by the victim’s 32-year-old grandson, was coming from Mersing heading towards Johor Baru. There were two other passengers inside the vehicle, a 90-year-old woman and a 34-year-old male,” he said.

“Investigation showed that while driving through the road, the driver lost control of his vehicle, which swerved towards the right lane shoulder before hitting the traffic light and road sign,” added Supt Hussin.

Supt Hussin added that the woman was seated at the back seat, and sustained serious injuries and died at the scene.

He said the driver and other passengers are still getting medical treatment for their injuries at the Kota Tinggi Hospital.

Supt Hussin added that the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, Kota Tinggi fire and rescue station operation commander Mohd Syukri Mohd Yusof said that nine firemen were deployed to the scene where they had to use rescue tools to pull out the victims from the wrecked vehicle.

He added that the deceased has been identified as Chong Yat Oi while the driver is Fong Chee Yong while the other passenger is Chin Cheng Fai.
