BUTTERWORTH: A DAP newcomer says if he wins the Perai seat, it is not because of his ‘face’, but because of the party.
Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo, a former deputy chief executive officer of a property development company, said Penangites are mostly comfortable with the Pakatan Harapan-led state government.
He believes the people would continue to vote for the coalition rather than other contesting candidates.
"There will be a challenge being a new face in the field. But there are benefits contesting under DAP, which is an established party and part of the state government.
"As far as Penang is concerned, the voters will look at the party over contestants before casting their votes.
"Being backed by a strong party and part of the Federal Government, I am sure there are a lot of things we can do,” he told reporters during his walkabout in Chai Leng Park on Monday (July 31).
Sundarajoo, 61, was responding to concerns of facing ex-DAP city councillor David Marshel, 47, who is contesting the Perai state seat as an Independent.
He said several issues have been identified with solutions in the works.
Among them were related to ownership titles of residents in Kampung Main Road, traffic congestion in Jalan Baru near the Sri Muniswarar Temple during celebrations, poor drainage system and flash floods, as well as Kampung Manis squatter issues.
Sundarajoo said he had spoken to the landowner in Kampung Manis.
"There are almost 300 families living as squatters in Kampung Manis, along both sides of Sungai Prai, who are in need of housing.
"I've spoken to the chief executive officer of Railroad Assets Corporation (RAC) under the Transport Ministry as they are the landowner.
"RAC has planned to call for a Request for Proposal in the next two months, with the process expected to take up another six to eight months," he said.
Earlier, Sundarajoo was accompanied by DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz for a walkabout at the market in Chai Leng Park.
