State polls: No disharmony in Barisan, says Zahid

PORT DICKSON: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has refuted claims of disharmony in Barisan Nasional following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's upcoming meeting with MIC.

The Barisan chairman said Anwar usually met with component parties of the unity government, adding there was nothing unusual about the meeting with MIC on Wednesday (Aug 2).

"As the Prime Minister, it is only natural for him to meet up to the 19 parties within the unity government," he said after attending a dialogue with Bagan Pinang and Linggi supporters on Tuesday (Aug 1).

The Deputy Prime Minister was commenting on Anwar's upcoming meeting with MIC, which was believed to be connected to allegations by the party of being sidelined by Umno during seat negotiations for the state polls.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president, said although not participating in the elections, both MIC and MCA actively supported Barisan’s campaign, indicating a positive development.

"We held a 'war room' meeting with representatives from MCA and MIC, and they confirmed that they had mobilised their entire machinery in the six states," he added.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid said Pakatan Harapan and Barisan had good compatibility and understanding, and their election machinery was committed to ensuring victory for the candidates in Negri Sembilan.

He said the results of the state elections in the six states would not affect the Federal Government's dynamics.

"However, having state governments aligned with the Federal Government ensures consistent local development.

"This is the first time that Pakatan and Barisan have collaborated to support each other during the campaign trail.

"Supporters from both sides may be puzzled but what truly matters is that both coalitions, guided by the spirit of this unity government, can effectively collaborate," he added.
