Woman killed in fire at old folks home


PETALING JAYA: A 69-year-old woman was killed and 14 others escaped unhurt when a fire broke out at an old folks home in Section 5 here.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail said Bomba personnel rushed to the scene after receiving the distress call at about 12.13am on Tuesday (Aug 1).

"Three officers and 11 personnel as well as two fire engines were deployed. The fire destroyed 30% of the building," he said in a statement.

He added that 14 residents, including the caretaker managed to save themselves and they did not sustain any injury.

"However, a 69-year-old woman who was in a room died in the fire. The fire was put out by civilians before Bomba arrived on scene," he said.
