Four Melaka food plants ordered to shut for hygiene lapses

MELAKA:Four food processing factories here were ordered to cease operations temporarily after health officers discovered rat droppings inside their premises.

Melaka Health director Datuk Dr Rusdi Abd Rahman said the notices were given to the factories at Batu Berendam, Bukit Rambai, Serkam and Umbai during a series of operations.

He said the two-day operation ended on July 31 and involved 30 officers from all three districts here.

"My officers issued 15 compound notices totalling RM35,200 under the Food Act 1983 during the operations where checks were conducted at 13 premises.

"Four of these sites were ordered to close temporarily when the level of cleanliness was found to be below par," he said on Wednesday (Aug 2).

Dr Rusdi said his team had taken stern action against 61 food processing factories, with five ordered to suspend operations since the beginning of this year, with compound fines totalling RM48,400.

He added that a total of 12 factories were issued compound notices totalling RM30,000 since the start of this year for non-compliance with the food hygiene regulations.
