Youths doing their own research before casting their votes

JOHOR BARU: For many young voters, there is much research to be done before they mark an ‘X’ on the ballot paper.

Take, for example, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia software engineering student Aiman Na’im Ariffin, who said that he has been scrutinising the profile of candidates for the Kuang seat in Selangor.

“Right after nomination day, I checked out the social media accounts of candidates who are contesting in the seat where I will be voting.

“Unlike the general election last year, there are fewer candidates this time around, so this makes it easier for me to get to know the candidate more closely.

“For me, it is important for voters to do their own research before picking the person to vote for,” said Aiman, 22.

He does not share the view that young voters tend to be influenced by their parents’ choice of political parties.

“Personally, I prefer to look at the capabilities of the candidates instead of just the party they are representing.

“I hope that those voting for the first time will take the time to do their own research before voting,” he said.

UTM petroleum engineering student Muhammad Hakim Mohd Zain, 22, said he is keeping himself updated on political affairs before heading to the polls on Aug 12.

“During the general election (last year), I managed to attend only one ceramah. This time, I am planning to check out more so that I have a better idea of the candidates.

“On top of that, I will also find out more about the candidates and their manifestos through social media.

“With technology, it is now easier for us to know about the elections and I want to make full use of it,” said the Negri Sembilan voter.Muhammad Hakim, who is currently doing his internship in Kuala Lumpur, said he would head back to his hometown a day before the election.

“Although this is the second time I am casting my vote, I am still excited to go through the whole process,” he added.
