Sept 9 fixed for Simpang Jeram and Pulai by-elections


JOHOR BARU: The polling day for the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state seats by-elections has been set for Sept 9, says the Election Commission (EC).

It also announced that the nomination day for candidates will be on Aug 26, while early voting would be on Sept 5.

The announcements were made on Thursday (Aug 3) by EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh in a statement after chairing the EC special meeting on the by-elections.

He also said that for Pulai parliamentary, there were 166,653 eligible voters for the upcoming by-election, adding that this was made up of 165,700 normal voters, 927 police force members and 26 absent voters based overseas.

Abdul Ghani added that for Simpang Jeram state seat, there were 40,379 eligible voters with 40, 373 normal voters and six absent voters based overseas.

The EC had opened applications for registration for domestic and international postal voting on Aug 3.

The deadline for postal votes applications would be on Aug 22 for category 1A (EC officers, police force members, armed forces members and media); Aug 12 for category 1B (Malaysians based overseas); and Aug 15 for category 1C (agencies or organisations).

Abdul Ghani then said that the estimated cost to run the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state seats by-elections was RM6mil.

The Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state seats became vacant following the death of Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, who was also Amanah deputy president.

Salahuddin, who was Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, died on July 23 following a brain haemorrhage. He was 61.
