PUTRAJAYA: Learners will only be required to sit for one theory test to get a motorcycle and driving licence instead of having to sit for separate tests under a new ruling to be enforced starting Sept 15.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said this decision was made following feedback and requests from the public.
He mentioned that this procedure was previously implemented many years ago, but it was later changed to the current one. However, it has now been decided to revert to the old policy.
“While we will be exempting the applicant from having to take two theory tests, they will, however, have to undergo circuit and on-the-road tests for the motorcycle and car separately,” he told a press conference yesterday.
This means that those who have a motorcycle licence, while no longer required to do a theory test, will have to undertake a circuit and road examination for their driving licence.
Loke said the curriculum to be taught in driving classes would be merged and applicants would learn theories for motorcycle and car handling simultaneously.
“We believe this new ruling will benefit the public as they no longer need to sit another round of six-hour classes just to obtain another licence.
“We also expect the public to enjoy savings of RM100 from this ruling,” he added.
On another matter, Loke said he had shared his views with the Prime Minister on the closures of several roads in Kuala Lumpur to make way for renovation work at the Loke Yew roundabout.
“I have asked the Prime Minister to re-look the decision. Our (ministry’s) view is that the closure will certainly cause congestion.
“Also, there is a need to look at the entire project,” he said.
He added that Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai had also shared his view on the project.
“Any road closure must be well planned to avoid inconvenience to the public,” he added.
On Aug 1, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said the closure – which will be for a year from Saturday to Aug 4, 2024 – involves the Sungai Besi Road leading to Sungai Besi or Petaling Jaya (opposite Fraser Business Park) and Loke Yew roundabout.
As an alternative route, DBKL said road users can use a traffic diversion from the Kampung Pandan roundabout to Sungai Besi or Petaling Jaya, which will be diverted into two parts: through the road next to Federal Bakery and into the contra route in the adjacent lane.
