KUCHING: Unity is the key to Sarawak’s stability and economic growth, says Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said that the people of Sarawak live together in harmony despite coming from different races, religions and political affiliations.

“The strong unity among Sarawakians has resulted in political stability, which in turn stimulates the economy.

“As our economy continues to grow, the people will enjoy the benefits of holistic development,” he said when launching the state-level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign here yesterday.

Abang Johari said Sarawak is a model of unity in diversity, exemplified by the concept of segulai sejalai (together in unity).

“In fact, the Prime Minister has adopted segulai sejalai to be popularised nationwide.

“We are honoured that Sarawak’s multiracial unity sets an example for others to emulate,” he said.

Abang Johari also said the state government will continue to work closely with the Federal Government towards national well-being and prosperity.

This is in line with the Malaysia Madani principles of inclusivity and togetherness, he said.

“We will strengthen our ties with the Federal Government and I believe we will receive more funding for development as a result of our togetherness,” he said, adding that Sarawak was allocated RM5.6bil this year.

Abang Johari later flagged off the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang convoy, which will travel across Sarawak all the way to Sipitang, Sabah.

The 34-vehicle convoy made its way around Kuching yesterday before heading off on its journey from Aug 8 to 14.

It will return to Kuching on Aug 15.
