Tawau-Tarakan air, sea links to resume by year's end

TAWAU: Air and sea transport services between Tawau and Tarakan in Indonesia are expected to resume operating by the end of this year,

Indonesian consul in Tawau, Heni Hamidah said the Indonesian government was now making efforts to restore the services.

"Final preparations are being made, especially with regard to the legal system for Immigration and Customs between the two countries.

"I am in contact with the relevant authorities in Indonesia who are now making preparations to restore air and sea links between Tawau and Tarakan," she told reporters after the 'Jom Sihat' programme with the Indonesian Consulate on Saturday (Aug 5).

She said the air and sea transport routes for Tawau-Tarakan - which were among the main choices of Indonesians and Malaysians - had been suspended following the Covid-19 pandemic.

"These services are important for economic development and socio-cultural cooperation, which brings direct benefits to both neighbouring countries and their communities as a whole," she added. - Bernama
