Dad’s frantic search for son ends in anguish

Police cordoned off the building where the body was found.

KOTA KINABALU: A man’s two-day search for his son ended in sorrow when he found the 21-year-old’s body sprawled on the ground at an unoccupied building.

It is believed the victim, who failed to return home on Wednesday, had fallen off the five-storey building at Jalan Sembulan.

The father, in his 50s, had gone out to look for his son, who worked as a waiter at a nearby mall, and made the discovery at about 8am on Friday.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said a police team was deployed to the location after being alerted.

“Doctors from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1 emergency unit pronounced the victim dead at 9.07am,” he said.

ACP Mohd Zaidi said the medical team that assessed the remains found fractures to the victim’s left arm, consistent with falling off from a significant height.

“The building has been left idle for almost seven years and the victim is believed to have gone up to the water tank area before falling off.

“There were foot tracks on the building’s staircase and police also found a portable vape device at the scene believed to belong to the victim,” he said.

Police have ruled out foul play for now and no weapons were found at the scene. The body has been sent to the forensics department at QEH1 for an autopsy.
