Lawyer and social activist Haris passes away

PETALING JAYA: Lawyer and social activist Haris Ibrahim (pic) passed away at his brother’s home in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur.

Haris, 63, had moved into his brother Adam’s home soon after he was diagnosed with end-stage lung cancer.

Haris’ sister-in-law Firoza Burhan said he passed away peacefully yesterday.

“He took in a few breaths and faded away,” she added.

Firoza said Haris had woken up feeling very tired in the morning, just a few hours before his demise.

According to Firoza, Haris had long accepted the fact that he was terminally ill and had a limited time to live.

“He took it stoically and fought courageously and underwent all the required therapies,” she added.

He was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in April 2022, and was given six months to live.

In spite of his illness, Haris attended the Malaysian Bar’s “Walk for judicial independence” in Kuala Lumpur on June 17, 2022, and arrived at the venue in a wheelchair.

He leaves behind a 28-year-old son and an 18-year-old daughter.

Meanwhile, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil expressed his condolences to the family of lawyer and activist Haris Ibrahim.

Fahmi in his Facebook post also prayed that the family would remain strong during these testing times.
