Wee urges a ‘youth drive’ in MCA

We need to be proactive and reach out to Undi18 voters, says party president

MUAR: Undi18 voters are a significant category and MCA Youth should reach out to them, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA president said in the past, the focus had been on among those in their 20s and students who had just graduated from universities.

“We need to also reach out to an even younger crowd now as even those who have just completed their SPM can vote.

“It is important for MCA Youth to take proactive action in getting to know this group of people and provide them with guidance and assistance,” he said during the Johor MCA Youth general annual assembly here yesterday.

Dr Wee, who is also Ayer Hitam MP, also urged representatives from Johor MCA Youth to contest in the upcoming party elections.

“I believe Johor MCA Youth has enough potential candidates to stand in the party elections. During the Johor election, half of MCA’s candidates were from the youth wing. In fact, both of the state executive councillors in Johor are below 40 years old.

“Many of the division youth chiefs are also below the age of 30. This shows that there is an ongoing rejuvenation process in the party,” he added.

Dr Wee also congratulated the Johor Youth and Wanita wings for their elections that went smoothly on July 27.

“I am glad Johor MCA Youth and Wanita leaders won their positions without any contest. This shows the unity among Johor MCA members,” he said.

Also present at the event were MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon and Wanita MCA chief Wong You Fong.

Meanwhile, Dr Wee reiterated the fact that despite not contesting in the ongoing six-state elections, the party would continue to support Barisan Nasional candidates.“We will try our very best to assist Barisan candidates. So far, the response has been good, but we still have to work hard,” he told reporters at the event.

Dr Wee said other party leaders have also been showing their support in helping out candidates in several constituencies.

“I was at Tok Mat’s (Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan) place on Friday where I campaigned and spoke to about 400 voters.

“I am not the only one doing so – all MCA leaders have been sent to other constituencies as well to support Barisan candidates,” he said.

Earlier over Facebook, Dr Wee shared photos of him on the campaign trail in Negri Sembilan in support of Mohamad, who is the incumbent Rantau state assemblyman.

“As you know he (Mohamad) has been ordered to rest by doctors because he has influenza.

“There is no denying that Tok Mat contributed a lot to the Negri Sembilan state assembly and had brought rapid development to the state, especially when he was the mentri besar,” he said.

“I hope voters can continue their strong support for him on polling day come Aug 12,” he added.
