KULAI: Johor MCA is targeting to recruit some 4,000 young members in the first phase of the party’s rejuvenation process.

Its president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the party needs to focus on rejuvenation and capture the interest of new members, especially the youth and women, following the Undi18 initiative.

“This is an important step for us to strengthen the party.

“I have set the target for Johor MCA to get 4,000 new memberships of the youth and this has to be done as soon as possible,” he told a press conference after opening the state MCA convention here yesterday.

Dr Wee urged the members to double their efforts to bring in more fresh blood to rejuvenate the 74-year-old party.

“There are people turning 18 years old every day and they are automatically registered as voters, unlike in the past when we needed to carry out campaigns to encourage and help them register.

“Due to this, the rejuvenation is very important, whether we like it or not,” he said.

To a question whether MCA was committed to supporting the unity government, Dr Wee said, “This is not a question. From day one, we have been giving our support until today.”

He added that although the party has no representatives in the Cabinet, it is still part of the unity government.

“We can give our opinions, be it constructive criticism or ideas, to improve the government. In a democratic country, this is something that is normal,” he said.

In his speech at the event, Dr Wee also announced his plan to defend the party’s top post in the election in September.

“If nothing out of the ordinary is happening, I will contest for the party president post,” he said to loud cheers from the crowd.
