PETALING JAYA: Cheaper mobile packages for Malaysians, civil servants and those in the B40 group will be made available this Merdeka Month, says Fahmi Fadzil (pic).

"In conjunction with the Merdeka Month, the ministry is working together with the Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), telco providers including two device manufacturers - Samsung and Honor - will be offering the 5G Rahmah Package and the Civil Servants Rahmah Postpaid Incentive.

"Both are cheaper Internet services packages than existing ones in the market," the Communications and Digital Minister said in a statement on Monday (Aug 7).

He said the 5G Rahmah Package is a smartphone 5G data device bundle plan where Samsung A14 5G and Honor 90 Lite 5G models would be offered for as low as RM240 together with a 60B data plan worth RM60 per month.

He said this package will be opened to all Malaysians.

"For those in the B40 group, a total of first 100,000 customers will enjoy the 5G Rahmah Package through a smartphone plan with the price as low as RM120," he added.

He said that the package will be opened beginning Aug 31 under a 24-month contract and a two-year warranty compared to the previous one-year warranty.

"To further appreciate civil servants, the Civil Servants Rahmah Postpaid Incentive will also be introduced which provides a RM10 rebate to be enjoyed by all civil servants in Malaysia," Fahmi said, adding that the rebate applies to any existing postpaid plan.

He said this would mean that civil servants could save as much as RM120 through the post paid packages.

Fahmi said the move to provide these packages is a serious effort by the government to bridge the digital divide through affordable quality Internet services.

He also said the effort is in line with the Madani Economy framework to lessen the rakyat’s financial burden.

Last month, Fahmi said that Internet prices are expected to drop by this September when the Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing (MSAP) is adopted.
