State polls: More affordable housing, cash aid among pledges in Perikatan's Penang manifesto

KEPALA BATAS: Penang Perikatan Nasional has unveiled its manifesto, covering eight core themes with 33 offers, including pledges to build more affordable housing and offer cash incentives to first-year undergraduates.

State Perikatan chairman Datuk Dominic Lau said the manifesto represents the aspirations of some 1.7 million Penang voters.

"The difference between us and Pakatan Harapan is that we will implement all our pledges," he told a press conference here on Monday (Aug 7).

Also present were Peanang PAS commissioner Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff and Penang Bersatu chief Zulkefli Bakar.

The core themes of the manifesto, known as 'Better Penang, Jom Kalih' (Let's change), include to drive the economic and addressing the cost of living; protect the welfare of the people; improving access to home ownership; guarantee the quality of health services; preserve environmental sustainability and strengthen the transportation system.

Other core themes include to steer the tourism sector and inculcate mature politics.

The state Perikatan also pledged to allocate RM1.5mil for industrial training programmes for Penangites via the involvement of the government linked companies and private companies.

The coalition also plans to provide a total of up to RM10mil worth of grants to small and medium businesses, including digital entrepreneurs as well as to waive the fees for food hawkers to ensure the growth of the sector.

Penang Perikatan also plans to give RM1,200 to all first year Penang undergraduates and also those who are enrolled in Institutes of Teacher Education.

It also plans to offer RM500 to all Penang matriculation and Form 6 students.

Under the housing initiative, it plans to build affordable houses priced below RM100,000 for targeted groups.

A total of RM5mil will be allocated as incentives to licensed fishermen to repair their boats and engines.

Another RM14mil will be allocated for the purpose of maintaining Penang public religious schools and vernacular schools.

Should Perikatan take over the state, it also pledged to allocate a total of RM60mil to assist senior citizens, single mothers, the disabled community, taxi drivers as well as school bus operators.

It also promised to provide free medical check-ups for all Penangites.
