State polls: Not possible for Perikatan to take over Federal Govt, says Khaled

BANGI: It is not possible for Perikatan Nasional to take over the federal government if they win in the upcoming six state elections, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The Umno vice-president said it could only happen if the people’s representatives shift their support from the unity government.

“There is the anti-party hopping law. So it is not possible for individuals (to change who they support),” he added.

“I do not think it will happen,” he told reporters after the Laman Ilmu@UKM project groundbreaking ceremony today (Aug 7) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

He was responding to PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang’s claim that a victory for Perikatan in the six state elections would allow for change in the federal government.

“We believe that all (of Hadi Awang’s) talk is only to confuse the voters so that they will support them (Perikatan),” said Mohamad Khaled.

“But I do not believe this will happen,” he added.

He also said the rakyat should give the unity government a chance to see through the Madani Economy framework, which is “very big and very drastic”.

He said the framework is a transformation, and not a continuation of a plan.

He also said changing the economy would bring new challenges that may not be solved using old methods.

Mohamed Khaled also said the government wants to ensure there is sustainability in their plan, as well as tackle the high national debt.
