State polls: Talk about bringing down Federal Govt will not aid economic recovery, says Nik Nazmi

Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

KUALA TERENGGANU: Perikatan Nasional's claim of being able to bring down the Federal Government through state elections is both impossible and unhelpful for the country's recovery, says Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

The Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister said those who had made such claims were ignorant of the anti-party hopping law which now forces elected reps to give up their seats if they defect from their political party.

"This shows that he does not understand the law," he said to Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu's claim that the Federal Government can be changed if the coalition wins in all six state elections on Saturday (Aug 12).

Ahmad Faizal made the claim on Sunday night while campaigning in Negri Sembilan, saying that a change in government could still be achieved even with the anti-party hopping law in place.

"Enough is enough. We have gone through several changes in governments," Nik Nazmi said, referring to the Sheraton Move in 2020 which brought down the Federal Government and the change of prime minister in 2021.

"The King as well as the people have said they want stability. Our country needs economic growth, investments and creation of jobs. Talk like this will not help the country. They should be a responsible Opposition," Nik Nazmi told reporters after meeting Pakatan Harapan activists campaigning in the Terengganu polls here on Monday (Aug 7).

Besides Terengganu, Pakatan and its ally Barisan are taking on Perikatan in the six state polls in Negri Sembilan, Selangor, Penang, Kelantan and Kedah.

State polls have no bearing on parliamentary seats.
