No let-up in surveillance at election hotspots

ALOR SETAR: A special Ops Cantas team from Bukit Aman will continue their surveillance of campaign activities at hotspots leading up to polling day.

Kedah police spokesman Senior Asst Commissioner Alzafny Ahmad said the team will include representatives from the election candidates and the Election Commission (EC).

“There are 20 hotspots here in Kedah, and we have been keeping an eye on these areas around the clock,” he said.

Kedah police chief Comm Fisol Salleh said police have received a total of 237 reports related to the state election, adding that a total of 18 investigation papers have been opened since nomination day on July 29.

“From the start of the campaign period until Monday, we have arrested two individuals,” he said.

Earlier, Comm Fisol had visited the state police headquarters to oversee the process of early voting among the police officers and personnel.

A total of 6,686 police and those from the General Operation Force in Kulim and Bukit Kayu Hitam, and their spouses were eligible for early voting.

In GEORGE TOWN, Penang police chief Comm Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said police are paying special attention to two hotspots – the Bayan Lepas and Permatang Pasir state seats.

“There were minor incidents in these areas, but they did not pose any danger to the public,” he said.
