RM1.2bil in projected losses to scams this year, says Home Minister

SHAH ALAM: The trend of losses due to scammers is projected to reach RM1.2bil this year, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Abdullah.

The Home Minister said crimes committed by scammers were fast becoming a serious issue.

"This was one of the issues discussed during a Cabinet meeting recently.

"The police have always paid serious attention but public awareness is needed to prevent scammers from approaching victims," he told reporters after attending a Human Capital and Personality Development Seminar here on Wednesday (Aug 9).

He said looking at the projected losses sent the message that the scams were growing.

"Their creativity is high with advanced technology. Even myself, on Sunday, received a call from a scammer disguised as the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN).

"This means that the number of the Home Minister is also called by them" he said adding that the police were always open in accepting any recommendations and views from various parties to deal with this crime problem.

In fact, he also mentioned the matter when there was a discussion with the top leadership of the police.

"The police is a large, well-trained, professional enforcement agency with a specific area of expertise.

"However, if we are faced with this new crime trend, of course, we have to open ourselves to accept any point of view, even if it comes from ordinary stakeholders," he said.
