State polls: MCA's support for campaigning aligns with party's long-term goals, says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: MCA’s decision to support the campaigns of Barisan Nasional candidates for the six state elections is a short-term tactical decision for long-term gains, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Sing.

The MCA president said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 9) the party’s current focus was on strengthening the economy and expanding the economic pie for all Malaysians while safeguarding the interests of voters and stakeholders.

"It is important for the party to focus on the implementation of comprehensive reforms, rejuvenating the party, and restructuring exercises diligently in preparation for the more important 16th General Election.

"Repositioning MCA in this government is a priority and participation in the state election could be a reckless act, potentially affecting our efforts to rebuild the party," he said.

He said the party aimed to set its priorities to achieve great success in the next general election.

"We intend to strengthen the policy framework on the economy, to be free from any negative influence caused by political bargaining and negotiations or competing with each other.

"MCA remains steadfast and focused in the party's struggle, among other things, embracing true statehood and continuing the vision of the party's founder in building a strong nation, adhering to the characteristics of simplicity, inclusiveness and prosperity," he said.
