40 undocumented immigrants nabbed in boat off Hilir Perak

IPOH: A group of 40 undocumented immigrants on a boat at Sungai Tiang, Rungkup in Hilir Perak has been arrested by police.

Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Ahmad Adnan Basri said they received a tip from the public regarding a suspicious boat at 8am Thursday (Aug 10).

“The boat was seen... off Sungai Tiang beach. It was heading towards Tanjung Balai, Indonesia from Rungkup but was stuck due to low tide since 7am.

“A total of 30 men and 10 women aged between 22 and 47 were found aboard the boat,” he said in a statement.

ACP Ahmad Adnan said three married couples were among those detained, all Indonesians.

“All of those arrested had worked in Malaysia without any legal permits. They worked at oil palm plantations, eateries, printing shops, as cleaners and such.

“The boat from Medan was set to send them back to Indonesia,” he said, adding that all the detainees had been taken to the Kampung Acheh marine police base for further action.
