Fan dies after collapsing during football match at Likas Stadium


KOTA KINABALU: A football fan who collapsed while watching Sabah FC taking on Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) at the Likas Stadium here on Wednesday (Aug 9) has passed away.

The 39-year-old man was said to have suddenly collapsed at around 8.30pm, moments after Sabah FC scored a goal in the Super League match.

Another spectator who wished to remain anonymous said the man lost consciousness while supporters were celebrating the goal.

"Coincidentally, I was seated with my wife in the same area (as the victim) when the man collapsed.

"I rushed to his aid to administer CPR and also tried calling for medical assistance," said the man, who happened to be a healthcare worker.

He said a medical team arrived at the scene and placed the victim on a stretcher before taking him to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

"But according to the doctor who attended to the victim, the man died while receiving treatment at the hospital last night," the healthcare worker said here on Thursday (Aug 10).

"I did what I could," he said, expressing sympathy for the victim's family.

The match, which ended with Sabah being trounced 1-5 by JDT, was attended by some 15,000 fans.
