Broaden list of schools eligible for toilet upgrade funds, Bukit Assek rep urges govt

SIBU: Funds for the upgrading of school toilets should be given to all schools and not just government schools, says Joseph Chieng.

"There are 13 secondary and primary schools in my constituency but only three schools have received the funds," said the Bukit Assek assemblyman on Friday (Aug 11).

The three schools were SMK Bukit Assek, SK Sentosa and SK Nanga Salim.

Speaking at a press conference, Chieng said mission schools, Chinese independent schools and government-aided schools did not receive the funds.

"I have called all schools in my constituency to check whether they have received the funding.

"I have also done a survey and found that only the three schools were given while mission school and SJKC (Chinese independent schools) were left out," he said.

Chieng said he would write to Deputy Education Minister Lim Hui Ying to relate the matter to her as he said, "Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said all schools would be given the funds to upgrade their toilets."

In line with the Madani concept, Chieng wants the ministry to also include these two types of school and be given equal funding for the purpose.

"I think it is rather unfair that only government schools be given this fund.

"Time is running out now as the upgrading of the toilets for safety and cleanliness reasons must be done before the end of this year.

"I hope the funds will be quickly dispersed to the rest who have yet to receive it," he added.
