State polls: KL police to monitor elections for smooth polling

KUALA LUMPUR: Police will be monitoring the headquarters of the Election Commission and all political parties to ensure the state elections on Saturday (Aug 12) run smoothly.

City police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said his personnel have taken all necessary steps to face any eventuality.

"Although Kuala Lumpur is not involved in the state elections, several political party headquarters are located here," he said, adding that people tend to gather here for processions and demonstrations.

"Any polls decision will be done by the EC at its headquarters in Putrajaya. We will ensure the safety of the area and ensure no trouble occurs," he told reporters on Friday (Aug 11).

He said they would also monitor the situation closely and gather intelligence to detect any threats swiftly.

"We will conduct surveillance for the duration of the state elections until the results are out.

"This is to ensure that no illegal gatherings or processions are held," he said, adding that police have not received any notice to hold gatherings during this period.

He said they would also conduct roadblocks at certain areas if necessary to stop any threats to safety and security.

"Our Team Cantas is ready to be deployed," he said.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily urged all parties to accept wins or defeats graciously.

"Let cooler heads prevail and those who want to celebrate their win, please do so at closed premises or within their own party headquarters.

"We will take stern action against anyone who intentionally breaks the law," he said.

Those with inquiries or information on cases can contact the City police hotline at 03-2115 9999.
