GEORGE TOWN: Roads leading to polling centres in Penang will not be closed during the state election on Saturday (Aug 12) unless it is absolutely necessary.
Penang police Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department chief Sen Asst Comm Puspanathan Wiresingam, however, said all heavy traffic is advised not to use the roads leading to the poll stations to prevent traffic congestion.
"A total of 349 officers and traffic police will be stationed at the polling stations to ensure a smooth flow of traffic," said SAC Puspanathan at the Penang police contingent headquarters on Friday (Aug 11).
He said Penang police have received 40 reports on election offences and have opened 18 investigation papers and one police enquiry from July 29 to Aug 11.
"The cases are being investigated under the Penal Code and the Communications and Multimedia Act," he said.
SAC Puspanathan also said during the period, police approved 1,649 permits for ceramah.
"A total of 5,776 police officers will be stationed at the polling stations.
"All campaign activities must cease at midnight on Friday and stern action will be taken against those who continue after the deadline," he added.
