State polls: Rain, thunderstorms expected in all six states, so plan ahead, EC tells voters


PETALING JAYA: Rain and thunderstorms are forecast in all six states where elections will take place on Saturday (Aug 12), and the Election Commission (EC) is urging voters to plan ahead.

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh said given the weather forecast on polling day, voters should make the necessary arrangements before heading out to polling centres.

He said the EC had taken the necessary steps to ensure the election process on Saturday (Aug 12) runs smoothly in a safe and secure environment.

"Nevertheless, the EC is prepared for any outcome that might occur" he said when contacted on Friday (Aug 11).

The Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) had forecast rain or thunderstorms in several places in Penang, Kedah, Selangor and Negri Sembilan throughout Saturday.

Meanwhile, Kelantan and Terengganu will have fair weather in the morning before thunderstorms hit both the east coast states in the evening.

The MetMalaysia website said it will be an especially wet morning in Penang, with rain predicted in all five districts - Northwest Penang Island, Southwest Penang Island, North Seberang Perai, Central Seberang Perai and South Seberang Perai - while in the evening, thunderstorms are predicted in all three Seberang Perai districts.

Rain in the morning is also forecast in seven Kedah districts including Langkawi, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Yan, Kuala Muda, Kubang Pasu and Pendang while in the evening, thunderstorms are forecast in nine districts.

Selangor voters are also advised to brace for morning thunderstorms in Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Klang, Kuala Langat and Sepang before the weather eases in the evening, with rain forecast in Gombak, Hulu Selangor and Hulu Langat.

As for Negri Sembilan, thunderstorms are expected in Seremban and Port Dickson while Rembau and Kuala Pilah will have rain in the morning while in the evening, thunderstorms are expected in Jelebu, Kuala Pilah, Jempol and Tampin.
