PAS hints at change for Kelantan

PETALING JAYA: PAS will propose that following the state polls today, Kelantan be helmed by a combination of someone with a religious background and the other a technocrat, says Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.

“We propose that the posts of Kelantan mentri besar and his deputy combine someone with a religious background and the other from a technocratic background,” Takiyuddin said during a live video announcement yesterday.

However, the PAS secretary-general acknowledged this would depend on the mandate from voters and remain the prerogative of Kelantan Ruler Sultan Muhammad V.

The current caretaker Kelantan Mentri Besar is Datuk Ahmad Yakob while his deputy is Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah.

Takiyuddin also said that while PAS would not be announcing any candidates for the posts, its leadership would propose to the Sultans of Kedah and Terengganu that the current mentris besar be retained.

The caretaker Kedah Mentri Besar is Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor while his Terengganu counterpart is Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.

Takiyuddin reiterated that it is up to the Malay Rulers to decide to accept such a proposal from the party leadership should PAS win the states.

“In a meeting on Aug 11 of the PAS central leadership in Marang, Terengganu, chaired by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, the party proposed to retain the mentris besar of Kedah and Terengganu, depending on the mandate of the people in the polls and the appointment by the Sultans of Kedah and Terengganu,” he added. He also said all PAS members were ordered to cast their votes for the party and Perikatan Nasional candidates during polling in the six states today.

Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu were under Perikatan rule with mentris besar from PAS prior to the dissolution of their state assemblies.
