KLANG: Jenjarom New Village resident Pua Lay Peng hopes whoever is elected as the new Banting assemblyman will be someone familiar with environmental pollution issues.
Pua, who is the secretary of the Kuala Langat Environment Action Association (PTASKL), said the local community wanted someone they could communicate with effectively.
She said she was unhappy with all of Banting's previous assemblyman.
"We need someone who can communicate with us and understand the gravity of the pollution issue that's been affecting us for years," said Pua.
She said the local community's main peeve currently was the reduction of the buffer zone between heavy industries and public places from 500m to 300m.
"There are now about three schools that are literally back-to-back with some heavy industry factories," claimed Pua.
The onus was on the new assemblyman to stop Kuala Langat from becoming the world's biggest garbage dumping ground, stressed Pua.
"The recycling factories in Kuala Langat are now receiving garbage from the Unites States, United Kingdom, Europe, Japan and Australia," said Pua.
She also said the people of Jenjarom New Village fervently hoped that more garbage will not be brought to their area.
Pua said Malaysia became the dumping ground of choice after China stopped importing waste products from other countries in 2017.
"We will definitely go and discuss this matter with the newly elected assemblyman and we except him to be receptive to our grouses," she said.
