State polls: Status quo possible because of unity pact, says PM

KUALA LUMPUR: The cooperation between the unity pact resulted in the status quo in Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Penang, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Speaking at the WTC Kuala Lumpur after the announcement of the state polls results, the Pakatan Harapan chairman said this was also possible because of the support from their partners in Sarawak and Sabah although they were not contesting.

"The Opposition too had success by staying in power in three states.

"In a democracy, we must respect the people's decision and accept it," he said.

He said regardless of victory or defeat, the people from all parties should remain friendly and maintain peace in the country.

"I would like to assure that the Federal Government will remain strong after the state polls. We will continue to work hard and continue to serve," he added.

Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Penang remained under the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional unity pact while Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu remained under Perikatan Nasional.
