SEREMBAN: Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun is expected to be sworn in as Mentri Besar for a second term at the Istana Besar in Seri Menanti today.
The ceremony will take place before state Ruler Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.
Aminuddin, who first became Mentri Besar in 2018, declined to confirm this, saying: “Please wait for the official announcement.”
“What I can tell is that the swearing-in is tomorrow (today),” he told reporters at his official residence.
Aminuddin, who won the Sikamat seat for a fourth term in Saturday’s state polls, had an audience with Tuanku Muhriz yesterday morning.
“I was asked to meet the Ruler and to, among others, explain the outcome of the elections and the present situation.
“This is quite normal as I am the caretaker Mentri Besar,” he said.
He said several other matters were discussed to ensure the state administration could continue to function as normal.
Asked when the decision on the Mentri Besar would be finalised, Aminuddin, who is state Pakatan Harapan chief, said this depended on the party leadership.
“The state Ruler had asked this to be expedited. So I believe it should be done as soon as possible,” he said.
Asked about a statement by state Perikatan Nasional chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu that Umno should get the Mentri Besar post as they won the most seats, Aminuddin said these were merely tactics deployed by the Opposition to destablise the unity government.
“This is to provoke the grassroots members. This is what the Opposition does best,” he said.
Ahmad Faizal, who is Bersatu deputy president, had said that Pakatan should offer the post to state Umno chief Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias based on the polls results.
Aminuddin asked the grassroots members of both Pakatan and Barisan to remain calm as the matter would be resolved quickly.
“Please be patient as we want to ensure the continuity of the unity government in Negri Sembilan,” he said.
Aminuddin said the positions of the state exco would also be discussed to ensure members from both sides were well represented.
Asked if DAP was supportive of him becoming the Mentri Besar, Aminuddin said the state Pakatan had nominated him to serve a second term.
“At the state level, Pakatan is unanimous in its support that I continue. That hasn’t changed,” he said, adding that the matter had also been discussed by the national leadership.
In Saturday’s polls, the Pakatan-Barisan pact won 31 of the 36 seats.
For Pakatan, DAP bagged 11, PKR (five) and Amanah (one). Umno which contested 17 seats under Barisan, won 14.
The remaining five seats were won by Perikatan .
In the 2018 polls, Pakatan won 20 seats while Barisan took the remaining 16.
