Man remanded for allegedly abusing ex-girlfriend's six-year-old daughter in JB

JOHOR BARU: A 29-year-old man was remanded for five days starting Tuesday (Aug 15) to help investigations into allegedly physically abusing a six-year-old girl in Kempas here.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate R. Salini at the Magistrate's Court here, and it comes after the man, who is also the victim’s mother's ex-boyfriend, was detained in Johor Baru at around 11pm on Monday (Aug 14).

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the arrest was made after the victim’s mother lodged a police report at 10.39am on Monday.

“The abuse allegedly took place in the mother’s house in Kampung Sinaran Baru, Kempas. The girl suffered injuries to her lips and face. She has been sent to Hospital Sultanah Aminah for medical treatment,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Comm Kamarul Zaman said the case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum jail sentence of 20 years and a fine of up to RM50,000, or both if convicted.

This case came just days after a seven-year-old boy was allegedly abused by his mother and her female friend in Bandar Layangkasa, Pasir Gudang.

The boy’s mother, 27, and a foreign woman, 30, were arrested at 12.30am last Saturday (Aug 12).

According to earlier reports, the boy’s incessant cries had worried neighbours, who went to the house to check on him.

When the mother and her friend gave excuses why they could not see the boy, the neighbours alerted the police.
