KUALA LUMPUR: Barely three months after becoming KL’s top cop, Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain has now been promoted to helm the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department due to his wealth of experience, according to the nation’s top cop.
The post of Bukit Aman CID director was left vacant after Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay was appointed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in June.
IGP Tan Sri Razarudin Husain dismissed the notion that Comm Mohd Shuhaily was “handpicked” for the director’s post and maintained that the appointment was made following a rigorous selection process.
“Comm Shuhaily, along with three other names, were initially considered for the job.
“I had a thorough discussion with Deputy IGP (Ayob Khan) on the choice of Bukit Aman CID director before forwarding the names to the Home Minister.
“It takes time to appoint a new director as the procedure includes going through the Police Force Commission,” he told a press conference after witnessing the handing over ceremony for the CID director’s post between Ayob Khan and Comm Mohd Shuhaily in Bukit Aman here yesterday.
Comm Mohd Shuhaily, said Razarudin, was finally picked given his vast experience, including in the Special Branch, helming two state police contingents, and even a stint as the police Security Liaison Officer in the United States.
“He had done exceptionally well as the police chief in Penang and Kuala Lumpur.
“I am confident that he will give his commitment to improving the department further with the assistance of deputy directors and other senior officers in the CID,” he said.
The IGP said the new director has to face various challenges including the ever-changing crime landscape involving advanced technology. “He has to keep up with the latest modus operandi used by criminals.
“On top of that, he has to emphasise aspects of integrity and good governance in the CID, as outlined among my top priorities for the police force,” he added.
The country’s top cop said that ultimately, Comm Mohd Shuhaily has to lead by example.
“It is the same message I always remind myself of as well.
“We cannot achieve success by going it alone. For me, I need the support of the Deputy IGP and all our directors to ensure public order and safety,” he said.
On Monday, Comm Mohd Shuhaily handed over the Kuala Lumpur police chief post to Comm Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid in a ceremony at the KL police headquarters.
