PETALING JAYA: A teacher who works in the interior of Sarawak spent his own pocket money to buy a Starlink Internet device to improve accessibility there.
Berita Harian reported that the educator's initiative had gone viral on social media after the moment was recorded by TikTok user @amoimorni.
The daily reported that the teacher's initiative was aimed at facilitating his work as an educator in a rural area considering the constraints in Internet access there.
In another video on the same social media platform, the teacher said the purchase of the Starlink device was the result of his own efforts without the help of others.
Nevertheless, he appreciated the government's efforts to bring the device into this country.
"We bought it ourselves, yes. Even if we bought it ourselves, the credit goes to the party that brought Starlink into Malaysia.
"It can make it easier for us to get good (Internet) access," he wrote in the caption of the video.
Previously, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the prices offered for satellite Internet services by Starlink were among the most competitive, compared to similar services available in the country.
Fahmi said the ministry together with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had conducted an assessment especially regarding cost issues before allowing the use of Starlink services.
The government also agreed to choose Starlink to overcome the problem of access in remote areas, after finding that it was in line with the Wireless Broadband Access programme under the ministry, he said.
