KOTA KINABALU: Some 6,500 chicks were burned to a crisp in an early morning fire at a row of chicken coops in Sabah’s south-western Papar district on Thursday (Aug 17).

Papar Fire and Rescue chief Rozlan Osman said they received an emergency call on the incident at Kampung Meligan at 2.14am.

He said a team comprising 10 firefighters and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit were immediately sent to the area.

“On reaching the location we found a row of chicken coops, in an area measuring 40x200sq ft, were engulfed in flames,” he said when contacted.

He added the team then proceeded to douse the flames.

“According to the coops' owner, the losses are estimated in the region of half a million ringgit,” Rozlan said.

He said firefighters managed to bring the fire under control at 3.09am, with the operation ending about an hour later.

No one was reported hurt, he said, adding that the department was still investigating the cause of the fire.
