Pupil wins Perak chess competition

A STUDENT from SJK (T) Ladang Holyrood has won the Perak state-level chess competition for primary schools, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Year Five student T. Manish won at the three-day event which was held at the Sri Iskandar Sports Complex earlier this week.

He and five other students who finished top six will represent the state at the national-level chess competition in Terengganu next month. Two of the five other top finishers are also Indians.

School headmaster Josephine Rayappan said Manish’s success was made possible by the constant encouragement and guidance from his father.

Mohan Kumar, 47, from the Kothar community in Tamil Nadu, went to the Ooty district officer’s townhall meeting with his wife, daughter and three others where they told the officials that their farmland had been taken over by thugs.

While pleading for help, they suddenly doused themselves with diesel and tried to set themselves on fire. The officials managed to grab the matchboxes from their hands and doused them with water before they could set themselves alight.
