Perikatan to name candidates for Pulai, Simpang Jeram next week

JOHOR BARU: Perikatan Nasional candidates for the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections will be announced next week, says its state chief Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal.

Dr Sahruddin said that Perikatan chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin would be making the announcement.

"The announcement will be made next week but the exact date and location have yet to be finalised. We will reveal the details as soon as possible.

"The two candidates are among 15 names that have been sent to the party’s central leadership earlier for consideration.

"We shortlisted the list of names and have come out with the best choice for the two seats," he said.

Dr Sahruddin, who was also Johor Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman, said this to reporters after chairing a meeting on the by-elections here.

Asked which party the two candidates were from, Dr Sahruddin said that he would leave it to Muhyiddin to announce.

"We leave the announcement to Muhyiddin but the initial list with 15 names that we submitted includes candidates from all three parties.

"However, we can confirm that the two candidates are Johoreans and professionals," he said.

The two by-elections were triggered after the death of Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, 61, on July 23.

Nomination day for the Simpang Jeram state seat and Pulai parliamentary by-elections was Aug 26, with polling on Sept 9 and early voting on Sept 5.
