Proposal for different National Day theme, logo for Perikatan states threatens unity, says minister

PETALING JAYA: The proposal for a different National Day theme and logo for states under Perikatan Nasional represents a social deficit which threatens unity and federalism in the country, says Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang.

"Any proposal to use a different theme and logo will disrupt the country's unity and halt the government's efforts in protecting the well-being of the community and progressing it into a developed nation," the Unity Minister said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 20).

National Day is seen as a national celebration where the theme and logo represent a symbol of unity for the people, he added.

This year's National Day and Malaysia Day (HKMM 2023) theme “Tekad Perpaduan, Penuhi Harapan” conveys the spirit of unity and patriotism while encouraging love for the nation.

"This noble effort by the government should be supported and shouldered by all levels of society because it is the people who determine whether genuine unity can be achieved or not," he said.

The minister said this in response to a controversial proposal by Perikatan Nasional-led state governments to have a different National Day theme and logo.

Aaron Dagang said the issue raised by Perikatan represents a social deficit, particularly towards political federalism.

"Political federalism relates closely to the spirit of togetherness, tolerance and good relations between the federal and state governments which should be handled with care.

"Leaders of all levels should play an important role as a catalyst for unity including administration at the federal and state levels within political, economic and social borders," he said.

Aaron Dagang added that racial diversity in the country must be a strength and a symbol of unity to the world.

He added efforts to shape and manage the nation's diverse communities and cultures require wise decisions made with care and integrity.

"Let us not be an impetus towards division or disunity among the people. It is time for all parties to help increase the level of national unity. It is not about deciding who is better and who is worse, who is good and who is bad, but it is about empowering each other without looking at one's background or creed.”
