KUANTAN: A notice of vacancy in the Pahang state assembly has been submitted to the Election Commission (EC) following the death of Pelangai assemblyman Datuk Seri Johari Harun.
State assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin handed the notice over to Pahang EC director Datuk Zamree Hamli on Monday (Aug 21).
Zamree said a meeting to discuss the vacancy would probably be held within a week.
Mohd Sharkar also noted that there were 16,475 registered voters in Pelangai as of May 2023.
Johari, 53, was among the 10 victims who died in the Aug 17 plane crash incident.
He was a first-term assemblyman who served as the state local government, housing, environment and green technology committee chairman.
Johari had won the Pelangai state seat with a 4,048-vote majority, besting Perikatan Nasional’s Kasim Samad (3,260 votes), Pakatan’s Ahmed Wafiuddin Shamsuri (2,031 votes) and Isa Ahmad from Pejuang (65 votes) in the 15th General Election.
Deputy Speaker Lee Chin Chen and state secretary Datuk Seri Zulkifli Yaacob were also present at the handover.
