GEORGE TOWN: Visitors to the New World Park Food City will get to bask in the spirit of national unity and patriotism as the popular food court here has been decked with 12,075 flags of all of Malaysia’s regions and states.

In conjunction with the 66th National Day on Aug 31 and the 60th Malaysia Day on Sept 16, the food court has strewn up the record-setting display across its roughly 1,200sq m ceiling.

Its operations director Heng Leng Heng said the display was a mark of respect to Malaysian visitors from all states.

“We decided to have all of the state flags on display as many visitors hail from different states,” he said. “We are all proud Malaysians and this is our way of showing it and recognising every visitor. We had flags custom-made for this very purpose,” he said.

Heng said the flags will be up on display until next year’s National Day.

“It is a year-long campaign for us and we will hold various programmes throughout the year with the Malaysian theme.

“There has been great feedback from our visitors, with many taking videos and photos and posting on social media,” he said.

Heng said the profusion of state flags will be submitted for entry into the Malaysia Book of Records for the “Most state flags on display” next month.

“We should receive the certificate before Malaysia Day and we will hold a programme filled with activities to celebrate the induction,” he said.
