KUANTAN: A notice of vacancy in the Pahang state assembly has been submitted to the Election Commission (EC) following the death of Pelangai assemblyman Datuk Seri Johari Harun (pic) in an air crash last week.
State assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin handed the notice over to Pahang EC director Datuk Zamree Hamli yesterday.
Zamree said a meeting to discuss the vacancy would probably be held within the week.
Mohd Sharkar also noted that, as of May 2023, there were 16,475 registered voters in Pelangai.
Johari had won the Pelangai state seat with a 4,048-vote majority, besting Perikatan Nasional’s Kasim Samad (3,260 votes), Pakatan’s Ahmed Wafiuddin Shamsuri (2,031 votes) and Isa Ahmad from Pejuang (65 votes) in the 15th General Election.
Johari, 53, was among the 10 people killed in the Aug 17 plane crash incident in Elmina, Shah Alam, Selangor.
He was a first-term assemblyman who also served as the state local government, housing, environment and green technology committee chairman.
Also present during the handover were Deputy Speaker Lee Chin Chen and state secretary Datuk Seri Zulkifli Yaacob.
