Let’s go back to the true spirit of togetherness, Dr Wee urges Malaysians

KUALA LUMPUR: National Day is for all Malaysians to celebrate, regardless of where one is and what tagline one chooses to use, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

“How we appreciate national unity, how we make Merdeka more meaningful to all Malaysians - that is more important; the rest is just rhetoric,” the MCA president told reporters when asked for comments on Perikatan Nasional’s proposal for a different National Day theme and logo in the four states under its control.

Dr Wee said such rhetoric had happened before and that the most important thing is the spirit of togetherness.

“You can celebrate in your own ways - some celebrate in kampungs, some in cafes. It doesn’t matter.

“For all politicians from both side of the divide, let us work together. We sing the same national anthem, and we all love the same country,” the Ayer Hitam MP said.

Dr Wee, who is also TARC Education Foundation board of trustees chairman, was at the "Malaysiaku Jiwaku" Merdeka celebration held at the Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) main campus in Setapak on Tuesday (Aug 22) morning.
