Move towards the politics of nation-building, say moderates

PETALING JAYA: Bring forward the politics of nation-building and focus on developing economic progress to the electorate, moderates tell politicians.

Tawfik Ismail, the son of the country’s second deputy prime minister Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman, said public patience with politicians has been stretched to the limit.

“Particularly with regard to the divisive and hurtful comments pertaining to religion and race.

“The politicians’ other role of bringing development and economic progress to the electorate seems to have taken a back seat,” he said when contacted.

“His Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s decree is timely and not a moment too soon,” he added.

Lawyer-activist Siti Kassim said while politicking is part of politics, it was the politics of nation-building that was needed.

“This includes serious efforts at meeting the immediate needs of the rakyat such as increasing liquidity in the economy, sustainable business environment and security of jobs, better education for our children and the elimination of corruption,” she said.

She added that the 3R (race, religion and royalty) issues had been going on for far too long on all sides of the political aisle.

“Start doing real things like educating our children for high standards of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and high standards of work in the civil service,” she said.

In His Royal Highness’ decree on Monday (Aug 21), Sultan Sharafuddin called on the new Selangor state government to immediately address all concerns of the people, especially those related to infrastructure and development like floods that frequently hit the stage.

The Ruler also hoped that the assemblyman will do an excellent job by visiting the sites of proposed and ongoing developments to assess their status.

His Royal Highness said it was his hope to see Selangor rise again and develop in every way, with people of different races living in peace, harmony, comfort and lasting prosperity.
