PETALING JAYA: In an effort to help tackle the impending climate crisis on an economic level, Climate Governance Malaysia (CGM) has announced the commencement of the inaugural National Climate Governance Summit.
CGM said that the summit’s main goal will be to provide Small-Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with key industry insights and knowledge in navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by the climate emergency.
"We understand that SMEs are a critical component of the Malaysian economy, comprising 97.4% of all businesses in Malaysia and contributing 38.4% of the GDP.
"Without getting SMEs on board, any climate or sustainability ambition will be undermined thus a comprehensive, carefully considered, multi-pronged approach is required to enable SMEs to smoothly decarbonise and increase their climate resilience.
"There is now an increasing need for SMEs to understand how to identify climate risks (physical and transitional) as key stakeholders demand increased reporting and disclosure from companies.
"SMEs must then also learn how to measure and mitigate the impacts of such risks as well as seizing opportunities which are arising in the climate crisis," it said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 23).
Panels and discussions will focus on key topics like climate governance, sustainability as well as other climate topics like decarbonization.
The event is set to take place early next month from Sept 5 to Sept 7 which will feature over 100 local and foreign experts in various panel sessions and workshops throughout the three-day event.
CGM added that interested attendees will be able to physically and virtually check out the event over its three-day period.
"All sessions will also be recorded and made available on the CGM website and media channel after the event ends," it said.
