Plane crash: Eight families out of the 10 victims eligible to receive Socso compensation


PETALING JAYA: Eight families out of 10 victims of the aircraft crash at the Guthrie Highway near Bandar Elmina, Shah Alam are eligible to receive Social Security Organisation (Socso) compensation.

"The latest check by Socso found that heirs of eight individuals involved in the mishap qualified to receive compensation.

"One of them will receive survivors' pension benefit under the Employees' Social Security Act, six heirs qualify to receive dependents' benefit under the Employees' Social Security Act while the remaining heir will receive two benefits, namely dependents' benefits under the Self-Employment Social Security Act and survivors' pension under the Employees' Social Security Act," Socso said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 23).

On Aug 17, Pelangai assemblyman Datuk Seri Johari Harun and five other passengers onboard a Beechcraft 390 Premier I business jet crashed near Bandar Elmina.

Also killed in the mishap were pilots Shahrul Kamal Roslan and Heikal Aras Abdul Azim including Grab driver Sharipuddin Shaari and Foodpanda delivery rider Muhamad Hafiz Muhamad Salleh.

The aircraft was travelling from Langkawi International Airport to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport when it crashed about three minutes before landing.

Meanwhile, Socso said so far, families of seven victims were provided RM2,000 for funeral arrangements while benefit for delivery rider Muhamad Hafiz was still pending further details from his family.

Socso added that compensation to Johari's heirs was being processed under survivors' benefit while payments for Foodpanda delivery rider Muhamad Hafiz was being processed under survivors' benefit and dependants' benefit.

Compensation payments for heirs of six other victims were being processed under dependants' benefit, said Socso.

Socso added that Idris Abdol did not qualify for benefits as he was a civil servant while Grab driver Sharipuddin did not make any contributions to the social security fund.
